Prominent Myanmar activist cancels trip to US

(AP) ? A prominent Myanmar activist has canceled a trip to the United States to receive a democracy award, to show solidarity with more than a dozen other activists whose passport applications have apparently been denied.

Min Ko Naing said Saturday that he will not travel to Washington for a ceremony at the National Endowment for Democracy, to send a message that "we should all be treated equally."

The keynote speech at Thursday's event is to be given by opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who leaves Sunday for her first U.S. trip since she was put under house arrest in 1990.

Min Ko Naing was a key leader of pro-democracy protests in 1988 and 2007. He spent most of the past 20 years as a political prisoner until his January release.
