Around the World in a Solar Plane

Build a plane that?s as heavy as a car, but uses only as much energy as a scooter. And stay aloft with just the energy of the sun?even after sunset. That, pilot Andr? Borschberg says, is the challenge facing the Solar Impulse team as it stares down its biggest challenge yet: flying around the world in a solar-powered plane.

You might have heard about Solar Impulse when the sun-powered plane project made its maiden flight in 2009, or in 2010 when Borschberg set the endurance record by piloting the aircraft for 26 consecutive hours, running on stored solar energy from on-board batteries after the sun went down. Now he and teammate Bertrand Piccard are off on even more ambitious ventures, which they came to New York to discuss last night. First, in 2013, they will fly their solar-powered plane across the United States. Then, in 2015, they will pilot a larger version around the world.

At this moment, 12 engineers from the Swiss-based team are disassembling the Solar Impulse, which has spend the last couple of years making shorter flights around Europe to promote the project and the idea of cleaner energy. The team members will then pack each piece individually (the components must me suspended in their containers so they can?t touch the sides), ship the plane to California on board a 747, and put the puzzle back together in the springtime. Solar Impulse will take off from the Bay Area in early May 2013. This isn?t a flight meant to set a record; the plane, with the team following behind it, will tour the U.S., following favorable skies south to Texas before visiting Washington D.C. and landing in New York in late June.

Then comes the big bird. "Construction of the second plane is halfway through right now," Solar Impulse marketing director Gregory Bratt says. Borschberg said it will have the wingspan of a 747 and the capacity for 50 percent more solar panels (provided by California-based SunPower). Where the ultra-minimalist first plane can fly legs of 20-some hours at a time, the new plane will be able to fly legs of four to five days to complete its circumnavigation of the globe. It includes a pilot assist mechanism that will allow the flesh-and-blood occupant to get some shut-eye.

The pilot will be able to lie down and move around a little more in Solar Impulse 2. That should please Borschberg who told PM he resorted to a sort of "belly dancing" to stay loose during his 26-hour night flight; the middle-aged Swiss pilot then gyrated his torso a bit as a means of demonstration. The cabin of the current plane is also not pressurized, so the pilot cruising at 30,000 feet must wear a full flight suit and oxygen mask at all times. Although it?s not complete, Bratt says, Solar Impulse and its partners are investigating a prototype solar-powered pressurization system for the second aircraft. "Now we have an economy-class cabin," Bratt says. "To go around the world, we need to give the pilots a business-class cabin." (Just don?t expect the comfort of an airliner upgrade. To keep energy use down, the cabin is insulated but not heated, meaning the temperature can drop below 0 degrees Fahrenheit inside. Also, the seat doubles as a toilet.)

Piccard credits the team?s utter lack of resources for its success so far. "By having no money, we had no pressure to spend and go in the wrong direction," he said. And by starting from scratch with no team and no expertise in building aircraft, he argued, Solar Impulse wasn?t bound by any conventions of what an aircraft should look like. "It wasn?t the people who were selling candles who invented the light bulb," he said.

Circumnavigation, however, looms as a much larger challenge. It will take five flights of about five days apiece, spread out over a couple of months, to get the new Solar Impulse around the globe. (The plane maxes out at about 40 to 50 knots if there?s no headwind.) But to Piccard, the flight isn?t about getting anywhere in a hurry. The adventurer who completed the first non-stop balloon circumnavigation of the globe (and whose father graced the pages of PopMech in the 60s) says it?s about making a statement that flying without fossil fuels can be accomplished.

"In the 21st century, explorers have the responsibility of bringing solutions to the big problems of humanity," Piccard says.

What Louis C.K. Can Teach You About Email Marketing | Business 2 ...

louis ckI?m sure everyone has heard the story of how Louis C.K. went against the conventions and decided to sell video of his Live at the Beacon Theater show on his website DRM free for $5.

In the process of setting up his website and distributing the special, C.K. created an email newsletter list. That?s nothing special, right? Well, maybe it is. In his emails, C.K. writes to his fans just as he would as if he was talking to them one on one, or on a stage in a comedy club.

Why is that important? It?s a personal connection. When I received his first email I envisioned him on stage saying it word for word.

I couldn?t help but laugh when I had to reset my password for the site ? the email from C.K. was brilliantly targeted to his audience.

password

Who is your audience? Are you actually talking and engaging with them?

Make your emails personal and helpful

Are your newsletters truly beneficial to your subscribers? If the answer is ?no?, or you are unsure, you have some work to do.

Why do I care if you have a new product? Tell me how it can make my life easier or better, and that I can?t survive without it.

Evernote is a product that I use and love. They have a great newsletter that they send out with tips and how others use Evernote in their business and in their daily lives.

evernote email

I wrote previously about how Evernote sent me tips based on an action I had completed. I emailed an article to my Evernote account instead of clipping it through a browser or entering it manually. Later that day Evernote sent me an email teaching me how to better use that feature. It made me a more educated user, and it made my life easier. Now I don?t need to update those notes the next time I sit down at my desk.

Segmented Email Lists

evernote emailsSome people may only want emails with coupons, discount codes, or news about sales but may not want product emails. Over time they may unsubscribe from your list if you send out more product emails rather than coupon emails. This can cause you to not only lose subscribers, but sales as well.

Evernote has newsletters for each of their apps. I don?t use those apps, so I opt not to receive those emails. Evernote knows that they?re not wasting my time with emails about Evernote Food or Evernote Hello and potentially turning me off of their emails which may cause me to unsubscribe. Don?t lump your subscribers into one list and mass market to them. Break them out into lists. Give them options when they are subscribing.

Don?t Overload Your Subscribers With Emails

Since the beginning of December I have received 11 emails from the Yankees Shop on MLB.com. That?s about an email a day and they are on a train heading to Unsubscribesville pretty quickly. However, big brands like the Yankess/MLB or major retail chains can afford to be loose with how often they email their list. They may have millions of subscribers on their lists and while they may have a thousand people unsubscribe on a given day, an equal number of people may subscribe to the list. It?s a gamble that big brands can take.

yankees email

If your lists are smaller, you can?t afford to play like that. Spread your emails out. Be upfront with your subscribers when they are signing up and tell them how often you?ll be emailing them.

Email subscribers are precious. Treat them as such. They are trusting you with their email address and attention. Don?t waste their attention and time. Building an email list is a long process, but doing it correctly (and not spamming users who didn?t explicitly sign up for emails or buying email lists) will pay off in the long run.

St. Charles pet store works with overcrowded shelter to save dogs ...

ST. CHARLES ? Moo Moo is an energetic Jack Russell terrier mix. Siegfried is a loving lhasa apso mix. And Thatcher, a miniature pincher mix, likes to people watch.

They?re some of the newest additions to the see-through kennels at Critters Pet Shop in St. Charles. While they?re no ordinary pet shop dogs, owner Caroline Janczak said customers probably wouldn?t know the difference.

?The three dogs, they are very sweet,? she said. ?They seek out human contact. They love people.?

What makes Moo Moo, Siegfried and Thatcher different from other dogs at the shop is they come from a shelter where animals are euthanized if they?re not adopted. Janczak said the three dogs seem to have once lived with families that were no longer able to care for them.

?They were clearly loved,? she said.

The dogs were joined by two shelter cats that are for sale at Critters Pet Shop. They?re part of an initiative that Janczak and her husband, Mark, hope to expand.

Caroline Janczak said she and her husband have sold a handful of shelter pets in the past, but it wasn?t until they met Michelle Alexander that they decided to take it to the next level.

Alexander worked with Kendall County Animal Shelter and Aurora Animal Control to place pets at Critters Pet Shop. She was inspired to reach out to pet store owners after seeing overpopulation in animal shelters.

She said her Yorkville home is a licensed pet shelter, and she kept receiving photos of animals that would be euthanized if no one wanted them. The volume of photos she received broke her heart.

?I would cry when I?d get these pictures of animals,? she said. ?You don?t know what to do.?

Seeing few options for the pets living in crowded shelters, Alexander said giving them a presence at a pet shop would help them find families. She thought the initiative would thrive at a mom and pop store, so she reached out to Critters Pet Shop, which is near her St. Charles workplace.

The Janczaks said they went to the shelters and handpicked the pets they wanted to sell, just like they would with a breeder. Dog trainer Vanessa Campbell has been working with the dogs and assessing their personalities to make sure they end up with the right families ? all the shelter pets are potty-trained, spayed or neutered and have up-to-date shots, and some know tricks.

Caroline Janczak said the challenge for pet stores to sell shelter dogs is that sometimes shelters are hesitant to work with them. Because Critters Pet Shop has been around for 25 years, shelters may be more comfortable working with it, and she knew of two stores in Naperville and Wilmette that are doing the same thing.

?I believe it?s the right thing to do,? she said. ?I think [pet overpopulation] has really become an issue with the economy. Sadly, a lot of families are being displaced. You don?t really think about it, but so do their pets.?

Alexander said millions of pets are unnecessarily euthanized each year, and the more animals that are removed from shelters, the fewer resources taxpayer-funded county shelters have to spend on caring for them.

?It?s really a win-win for everybody,? Caroline Janczak said. ?... You don?t have to have a fancy purebred dog to have a wonderful dog.?

There are 21 hours, 46 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

Entrepreneurs Need to Go Back to High School | BostInno

Timothy Ericson - CEO and Co-Founder of ZagsterMost people only return to high school for reunions, but I recently found myself roaming the halls at Perth Amboy High in New Jersey, where I shared my experiences in starting and running a company with an economics class.

I was moved by the experience and thought it was worth sharing with other entrepreneurs.

Although I had spoken to college students before, high school was a new realm for me. Unsure what to tell these students at first, I reflected on my experiences as my company, Zagster, which was incubated by the startup accelerator TechStars. I remembered being most impressed and most affected by those speakers who told the true stories of their companies, free of BS or any hype. ?With the positives and negatives of entrepreneurialism on full and equal display, I had a much better idea of what I was getting myself into.

It can be tempting to look at famous entrepreneurs like Mark Zuckerberg and write off their accomplishments as being easy or a result of being in the right place at the right time, but in fact, it takes an unimaginable amount of hard work and dedication to be successful as an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs can not be weak, lazy or uninvolved; founding and sustaining a new business simply takes too much effort, too many long nights and early mornings. Initially, I worried that being this honest might actually discourage some students from following their dreams. But as I gave it more thought, I realized that the truth would not deter them if they truly have it in them to be entrepreneurs. As any entrepreneur will tell you, hard work is inherent in his or her DNA.

To succeed as an entrepreneur, what you need more than anything else is passion. I found my passion in cycling. A lifelong bike rider, I?ve never owned a car, and I was so blown away by witnessing the launch of the Parisian bike share program V?lib?, that I decided to make bike sharing my life?s work. Not only is biking incredibly fun, it also improves your health, your quality of life and even how long you live.

What we?ve found through our years of work at Zagster is that if you make bikes accessible, people will use them. Our mission is to get every single person we can on a bike. Zagster works not just because we spent years finding the right business model or because we?ve had the best mentoring, but because we are truly passionate about the goals toward which we?re working.

I told these kids at Perth Amboy High that if they want to strike out on their own with a new business, the very first step is to find their passion. I told them that when they?re doing what they want to do, it doesn?t feel like work.

Now, I don?t think I would have believed that if someone told me that when I was in high school ? or even in college. But it?s true; though it may not all be fun and games, as long as you?re pursuing your passion, all those late nights, early mornings, skipped lunches and long flights are surprisingly easy to bear. I?ve been happy to wake up in the morning every single day for the last five years ? and I?m not a morning person.

I also told them that no one becomes successful all by him or herself. There are literally hundreds of people along the way who have helped shape Zagster?s identity as well as my own, and most of them did it for free because someone else had helped them at some point in their careers.

For many entrepreneurs, it starts with a single person who inspires them to drop everything and start a business. Sometimes it?s someone famous, but more often, it?s just someone like me telling stories from the trenches. Although entrepreneurship certainly isn?t for everyone, sometimes even the greatest potential entrepreneurs don?t see it in themselves without having someone point them in the right direction. If I am that person for even one kid in that class, it makes the time I spent with those students on one of my few vacation days completely worthwhile.

Of course, once you?ve got the passion, you?ve got to find a way to apply it in some worthwhile endeavor. While it took Zagster more than four years of failures (not to mention a name change), we have developed a business model that is scalable and repeatable. Failing is tough, but it?s going to happen. The most important thing is to fail quickly, learn from the failure and apply those lessons to continually evolve the business. At Zagster, each failure ultimately led us to the business model we are successfully employing today ? a full-service solution to bike sharing for corporate and university campuses, apartment buildings, hotels and other organizations that want to offer our economical, healthy and environmentally friendly service.

The best time to become an entrepreneur is when you have minimal responsibilities; it only gets harder as you get older and have more obligations, like paying a mortgage and spending time with your family. I started Zagster ? then called CityRyde ? right after graduating from Drexel University, where the co-op program had made me realize that the ?traditional? path of graduating from college, getting a ?good? job at a large company and working my way up the corporate ladder wasn?t for me. That career path has become something of an American clich? ? and it?s less viable than ever.

Drexel?s co-op program is quite similar to that of Northeastern University here in Boston; for three six-month terms spread over five years as an undergrad, Drexel students go out into the real world and work. As a college student, I worked for a very small finance company, a mid-sized engineering firm and an international Fortune 500 company. As it turns out, the greatest thing I learned from all this was that latching onto a large company and working my way up was not for me. But I also learned that even though I had great professors and gained valuable business knowledge in the classroom, there is no real substitute for going out and working in the real world.

The experience Drexel and Northeastern students gain on co-op gives them an invaluable edge on the competition, but we can start even earlier. While many entrepreneurs speak to college classes (something I have done at several universities around the country), I think there is much to be gained by speaking to high-school students as well, and especially to classes like the one I visited, an economics elective in which several of the students said they wanted to be entrepreneurs. It?s up to the entrepreneurial community to reach out to high schools and ?pay forward? the wisdom we gained from those who came before us. The earlier we can implant the idea of becoming an entrepreneur, the more time these kids will have to channel their passions into new businesses.

So, my fellow entrepreneurs, what are you waiting for? Start by contacting your own high school and asking whether there are any classes that could benefit from hearing about your experiences. Speak honestly about your success and failures ? both are equally important. Think of all the people who have helped you get where you are today; just as they did, you can inspire the next generation to do great things.

UN talks nearing weak deal on climate

Local and international activists march inside a conference center under a giant statue of a spider to demand urgent action to address climate change at the U.N. climate talks in Doha, Qatar, Friday, Dec. 7, 2012. (AP Photo/Osama Faisal)

(AP) ? Bleary-eyed negotiators from nearly 200 countries haggled through the night over new draft agreements on emissions cuts by rich countries and aid for poor as United Nations climate talks spilled into Saturday.

The two-week conference was set to finish Friday, but as so often in the annual U.N.-led talks, negotiators struggled to reach an agreement, especially on money matters.

After all-night wrangling, the latest drafts Saturday lacked the strong commitments on climate action and financing by rich countries that poor countries had hoped for. But they did include a text on "loss and damage," a relatively new concept which relates to damages from climate-related disasters.

Island nations under threat from rising sea levels have been pushing for some mechanism to help them cope with such natural catastrophes, but the United States has pushed back over concerns it might be held liable for the cleanup bill since it is the world's second-biggest emitter behind China.

A final agreement from the talks was expected Saturday.

Countries plan to adopt a new climate pact by 2015. The Doha conference focused on side issues such as extending an existing emissions treaty for rich countries and increasing financing to help poor countries deal with global warming.

Poor countries came into the talks demanding a timetable on how rich countries would scale up climate change aid for them to $100 billion annually by 2020 ? a general pledge that was made three years ago.

But rich nations, including the United States, members of the European Union and Japan are still grappling with the effects of a financial crisis and were not interested in detailed talks on aid in Doha.

The latest texts included no reference to any mid-term financing targets, just a general pledge to "identify pathways for mobilizing the scaling up of climate finance."

Quamrul Chowdhury of Bangladesh, lead negotiator for the group of least developed countries, said it was the "weakest outcome" he had seen since the U.N. climate talks started two decades ago.

"We are reluctant to accept it. But anyhow we have to look at it. Most of our delegation has already left," he said.

The goal of the U.N. talks is to keep temperatures from rising more than 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 Celsius), compared to preindustrial times. Temperatures have already risen about 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.8 Celsius) above that level, according to the latest report by the U.N.'s top climate body.

A recent projection by the World Bank showed temperatures are on track to rise by up to 7.2 Fahrenheit (4 Celsius) by the year 2100.
