Google and Samsung to co-brand a 10-inch Nexus ... - Know Your Cell

Google and Samsung are working on a 10-inch Nexus tablet, according to a recent report from CNET. Analyst Richard Shim?told the publication that the Android-powered tablet would measure 10.1-inches, with a pixel density higher than that of Apple's new iPad (299 PPI compared with a 264 PPI).

Google currently sells a budget-friendly, $199 Nexus 7, and has plans to release an even cheaper $99 tablet (with production expected to begin in December). But Shim put this larger version in a different tier, noting that it will be a ?high-end device.? The beefier model would not only rival Apple's iPad with its slick display, but it would also likely compete at a similar price point, falling somewhere in the $500 range.?

As it stands, Apple dominates the tablet market. The company is also slated to release its own smaller, 7-inch tablet soon, which should help push sales even further by competing directly with Amazon's Kindle lineup and Google's Nexus 7.

Android-based tablets just haven't really had what it takes to keep up with the iPad thus far. But a joint effort by Samsung and Google could prove otherwise; both companies have already seen strong sales with the Galaxy S3 smartphone and the Nexus 7 (Google teamed up with Asus for that one).?

This wouldn't be the first time Google and Samsung have partnered up, either. The search giant already co-brands Samsung's?Galaxy Nexus phone.?But working together on a tablet could certainly strengthen that relationship while creating some serious competition for Apple.?

Japan car sales in China tumble, hit by islands row

BEIJING (Reuters) - Japanese car makers reported tumbling sales in China for September, confirming the impact of a territorial row between the two countries and raising concerns that their market share in the world's biggest auto market will continue to shrink.

A Toyota Motor Corp spokesman said on Tuesday that sales in China fell 48.9 percent in September from a year earlier, while Honda Motor Co reported its sales in China fell 40.5 percent.

Nissan Motor Co's China auto sales, excluding imports, fell 34.6 percent in September from a year earlier, according to its China venture partner Dongfeng Motor Group Co , and Suzuki Motor Corp said sales to dealerships in China fell 42.5 percent last month from a year earlier.

Violent protests and calls for boycotts of Japanese products broke out across China in mid-September after Japan bought two of the East China Sea islands, known as the Diaoyu in Chinese and the Senkaku in Japanese, from their private owners.

Analysts say sales could continue to weaken as long as the diplomatic tension remains.

"We had cut our 2012 sales forecast of Japanese cars by 100,000, but it seems to be way too conservative now," said John Zeng, Asia Pacific director for industry consultancy LMC Automotive.

"We had previously expected them to sell 3.04 million, but it will be great if they could move 3 million."

Toyota and its two local Chinese partners sold a total of about 44,100 vehicles in September, the company's Beijing-based spokesman Takanori Yokoi said.

For the first nine months of this year, sales by Toyota and its partners totaled about 640,200 vehicles, up 4.6 percent from the year-ago period, Yokoi said.

Smaller rival Mazda Motor Corp said last week that its China sales tumbled 35 percent in September from a year earlier.

Among the Japanese carmakers, Nissan is the most exposed to the Chinese market, followed by Honda and Mazda.

In 2011, Nissan sold 883,000 vehicles in the world's biggest car market, which accounted for about 27 percent of the vehicles the firm sold globally. For Honda, that ratio was about 20 percent, while for Mazda, it was around 18 percent.

For Toyota, Japan's biggest automaker, China accounted for about 12 percent of the vehicles it sold globally in 2011.

Market share of Japanese brands stood at 21.2 percent at the end of August, down from 21.6 percent in 2011, according to official data. German brands advanced to 23.3 percent from 21.3 percent, while market share of Korean brands rose to 9.3 percent from 9 percent during the period.

The dramatic fall-off in demand for Japanese vehicles has been an unexpected boon for other foreign brands. In September, BMW's China sales surged 55 percent, Audi by 20 percent and Hyundai Motor by 15 percent.

13,000 got suspect steroid shots; risk uncertain

NEW YORK (AP) ? As many as 13,000 people received steroid shots suspected in a national meningitis outbreak, health officials said Monday. But it's not clear how many are in danger.

Officials don't how many of the shots may have been contaminated with meningitis-causing fungus tied to the outbreak. And the figure includes not only those who got them in the back for pain ? who are most at risk ? but also those who got the shots in other places, like knees and shoulders.

Those injected in joints are not believed to be at risk for fungal meningitis, said Curtis Allen, a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He said there was no breakdown available of how many had the shots in the back or in joints.

The CDC count of cases reached 105 on Monday, including eight deaths. A ninth death was reported late Monday by a Nashville, Tenn., hospital.

Tennessee has the most cases, followed by Michigan, Virginia, Indiana, Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina and Ohio.

All had received shots for back pain, and investigators suspect a steroid medication made by a specialty pharmacy. About 17,700 single-dose vials of the steroid sent to 23 states have been recalled. Inspectors found at least one sealed vial contaminated with fungus, and tests were being done on other vials.

The first known case of the rarely seen fungal meningitis was diagnosed last month in Tennessee. The steroid maker, New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass., recalled the drug, and over the weekend recalled everything else it makes.

"While there is no indication at this time of any contamination in other NECC products, this recall is being taken as a precautionary measure," the company said in a statement.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord, and a back injection would put any contaminant in more direct contact with that lining.

Symptoms on meningitis include severe headache, nausea, dizziness and fever. The CDC said many of the cases have been mild and some people had strokes. Symptoms have been appearing between one and four weeks after patients got the shots.

A Michigan man whose wife's death was linked to the outbreak said Monday that he, too, was treated with steroids from one of the recalled batches.

"Not only have I lost my wife, but I'm watching the clock to see if anything develops," George Cary said, as friends and family gathered for his wife's wake in Howell, 60 miles northwest of Detroit.

His wife, Lilian, 67, had been ill since late August, but meningitis wasn't detected until Sept. 22, her husband said. She suffered a stroke and died Sept. 30, he said.

Michigan officials have not released the names of two people who have died in the outbreak in that state, but did say one was a 67-year-old woman.

Fungal meningitis is not contagious like the more common forms. The two types of fungus linked so far to the outbreak are all around, but very rarely causes illness. Fungal meningitis is treated with high-dose antifungal medications, usually given intravenously in a hospital.

The steroid is known as preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate, which the compounding pharmacy creates by combining a powder with a liquid.

Doctors should contact any patient who got doses from any of the recalled lots, and should look back at their records as far back as mid-May, CDC officials say.

College sports over the years have evolved into big-money business. ?And much like in business people expect a return on their investment, whether those people be administrators, fans, or coaches. ?This season Kentucky?s football program has not been receiving that all important return on investment from third year coach Joker Phillips. ?So far in the 2012 campaign, the ?Cats find themselves 1-5 with little sign of improvement ahead given injuries, inexperience, and schedule. ?So, just what is the University paying for this type of performance? ?Joker Phillips is currently the 3rd lowest paid coach in the SEC at 1.7 million dollars per season, ahead of only?interim Arkansas Coach, John L. Smith and new Ole Miss Coach, Hugh Freeze. ?But, these numbers do little to tell you the performance on the field. ?So, to cut through this issue I examined all SEC coaches? reported salaries and compared them to how many wins they have acquired and to the adjusted?performance?on the field in 2012.

First a bit of elaboration. ?The first few columns are pretty self-explanatory, they?re just yearly salary, wins thus far in 2012, and the price per win that the respective University pays. ?Adjusted wins are numbers that give extra credit (+/- .25 wins) for 21+ point wins and subtracts credit for 21+ point losses. ?Adjusted cost per win is just like its price per win counterpart, but adjusted for?scoring?margin. ?When making evaluations, use your best judgement. ?Would anyone suggest that Nick Saban and Les Miles are giving minimal return to Alabama and LSU? No, they just have high?salaries?and have played a small number of games, I?d?be willing to bet they?d be high up on the list later in the season. ?Also, keep in mind that teams have not played the same amount of games and have played different schedules so the numbers are not completely on the same scale right now, but they still give a decent look at financial efficiency.

As you can clearly see from the above table, Joker Phillips is not giving the proper rate of return in any type of performance this season. ?In terms of pay scale efficiency Joker is currently only ahead of Auburn?s Gene Chizik who currently is being paid 3.5 million dollars per season. ?In terms of adjusted wins Joker?s squad is the only one with fewer than one win (one 21+ point victory, and two 21+ point losses).? There really are few circumstances where this is acceptable and those usually come after a large stint on probation or a coaching change with massive departures. ?Unfortunately, those instances do not apply to Kentucky in any way for the 2012 season. ?It was stated earlier that Joker Phillips is the third lowest paid coach in the SEC at the current juncture at 1.7 million per year, ?so the point could be made that Kentucky is finally getting what it paid for in terms of performance on the field. ?Is that a good argument to make? ?Given recent home attendance and message board fodder, most fans now are seemingly presenting this argument loud and clear.
