Apple Q2 2012: 35.1M iPhones, 11.8M iPads, 4M Macs, and 7.7M iPods

aapl-q2-12-unitssoldApple just released its second quarter financial numbers. Overall hardware sales decreased from its record previous quarter but with the notable exception of the iPods, they're up from the same quarter a year ago. Apple sold 88% more iPhones in the quarter than it did during the same time last year. Besides the huge year-over-year increase of iPhone sales, iPad and Mac sales increased 188% and 7%, respectively. However, the iPod didn't fare so well: Sales are down 15% over last year's quarter.

George Zimmerman Released on Bail, Will Await Trial in Undisclosed Location

George Zimmerman has been released from a Florida jail at midnight this morning after posting $150,000 bond. Charged with second-degree murder, he will now be living in a secret location as he awaits trial for the death of Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman exited the John E. Polk Correctional Facility (JEPCF) at the Seminole County Sheriff's Office fitted with an electronic monitoring device.

The GPS device, which can pinpoint an offender's whereabouts at any given time, will be monitored by the SCSO and Seminole County Probation.

Reports indicate that he may be allowed to leave the state, which is unusual in a murder case, but is arguably necessary for his own security.

At his bond hearing on Friday morning, Judge Kenneth Lester agreed to allow George Zimmerman to post a $150,000 bond and leave jail pending trial.

The prosecution had argued that Zimmerman should be denied bail or that it should be set at $1 million, but Lester disagreed on both accounts.

Bail is rarely denied altogether unless the defendant is considered dangerous or a flight risk, which he is not (especially with the ankle monitor).

Zimmerman also stunned the court Friday by taking the stand and apologizing to Trayvon Martin's family, who were sitting in the courtroom.

"I am sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how old he was. I thought he was a little bit younger than I am," the 28-year-old said.

"I did not know if he was armed or not."

Zimmerman told police the night he shot and killed Trayvon Martin that he was acting in self-defense after Martin punched him and pounced on him.

Zimmerman told police that Martin then bashed his head into the concrete sidewalk during the altercation that took place in Sanford, Fla.

A bloody photo of George Zimmerman's head taken right after the attack surfaced last week, perhaps bolstering his self-defense claim.

Still, his actions that night remain questionable enough for the D.A. to bring second-degree murder charges in the death of Martin, 17.

Jennifer Lawrence In Talks For 'Glass Castle' Movie

'Hunger Games' star may land a lead role in the film adaptation of Jeannette Walls' best-selling memoir.

With the success of "The Hunger Games," it's no surprise Jennifer Lawrence is a sought-after leading lady. With three films hitting theaters this fall — including "House at the End of the Street" and "The Silver Linings Playbook" — she has a busy schedule, but it looks like Lawrence might add another project to her repertoire.

Deadline Hollywood reports that Lionsgate's production president, Erik Feig, has acquired the rights to gossip columnist Jeanette Walls' best-seller "The Glass Castle: A Memoir." Gil Netter ("The Blind Side") is set to produce and Marti Noxon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "I Am Number Four") is attached to pen the script.

Walls' book follows her nomadic childhood as she grew up moving around the Southwest desert with her parents and three siblings. When he was sober, her father Rex nurtured his children's imagination and taught them to embrace life. Her mother Rose Mary was an artist who would rather paint and write than be responsible for her family. When their money was finally gone, they returned to West Virginia where her father drank and stole and Walls and her siblings were forced to support each other. While her tale seems grim, she paints her parents in a loving light because, despite her family's flaws, they played a huge role in her success. Upon its release in 2005, the book spent more than 250 weeks on the New York Times Best Sellers list, which was a first for any memoir.

The story is a departure from the male-centered movies Lionsgate usually releases. They're known for films such as "Warrior," "The Lincoln Lawyer," "Abduction" and "Conan the Barbarian." But perhaps with the overwhelming success of "Hunger Games" and its strong heroine, the company will focus on more female-lead narratives.

Check out everything we've got on "The Hunger Games."

The countdown is over and Samsung's not offering much to whet our appetite. A medley of opaque angles of galactic travel are meant to represent next week's big news story, alongside some brief claims of technology that fits easily in your hand. It finishes all too soon on those glossy enamel puddles shown above. The second trailer reveals more of the same, with Samsung promising the device will become "a natural side of life", throwing in a quick jibe at those rival smartphone-carrying "sheep". While we reckon we broadly know what to expect when it comes to internal hardware, we're still itching see how Samsung's looking to reinvigorate its phone design following HTC's stylish smartphone salvo. Well, at least it's just over a week left to wait.
