Local youth fencer excels in first season at adult ... - Youth Recreation

Oliver Galbraith, a former StarNews Little Star, is now fencing at the adult level with his Cape Fear Fencing Association teammates.

The team competed in its first open tournament of the season on September 17. In that event Oliver competed in a field of 14 other fencers and won the C-level foil division. With his performance, he now has a C level rating.

Lynn Krupey explained the rating system in press release -

?? Fencing ratings are awarded by the national fencing governing body, the US Fencing Association and are earned by winning or placing highly in any USFA sanctioned tournament.? A letter-rating system is employed using A through E, with A-level fencers being the highest (A-level fencers that compete in the Olympics).? E is the first rating earned, and any fencer who hasn?t yet earned an E is designated as unrated or U. ??

In other news from the CFFA, a six-week beginner?s fencing class will start 6:30 p.m. October 4 at in the lower level of Tileston Gym at St. Mary?s on the corner of 5th and Ann streets in downtown Wilmington. Head coach Greg Spahr will be the instructor for the hour-long sessions held each Tuesday and Thursday.

?? Beginning fencing classes include the basic elements of fencing, the history of the sport, foundational techniques, conditioning, refereeing, and tournament strategy. ??
